Verfahren zur Herstellung von reinem 2-Hydroxybenzylalkohol, reinem 4-Hydroxybenzylalkohol oder einem Gemisch beider Hydroxybenzylalkohole durch Umsetzung von Phenol und Formaldehyd in Gegenwart basischer Katalysatoren und anschließende Isolierung der Hydroxybenzylalkohole aus dem Reaktionsgemisch durch eine mindestens 2-stufige Gegenstromextraktion in einem Lösungsmittelsystem Wasser/mit Wasser nicht oder begrenzt mischbares organisches Lösungsmittel.
