[origin: US4158010A] An improved process for converting an organosilane which comprises reacting at least one silane (A) having the formula RaSiCl4-a WITH AT LEAST ONE SILANE (B) which differs from silane (A) and has the formula RbSiCl4-b IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ORGANOALUMINUM COMPOUND HAVING THE FORMULA Rc1AlY3-c AND AT LEAST ONE SILANE (C) having the formula RbHcSiCl4-b-c AND FROM 0.1 TO 5 PERCENT BY WEIGHT BASED ON THE WEIGHT OF SILANES (A), (B) and (C) of a hydrogen halide, in which R is a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and is free of aliphatic unsaturation, R1 is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Y is selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms which are bonded to the aluminum via oxygen and are free of aliphatic unsaturation, a is 2, 3 or 4, b is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and c is 1, 2 or 3 and the sum of b+c cannot exceed 4.
