[origin: US4200728A] Polyethers, preferably containing sulfone groups, are obtained by a multi-stage condensation process at from 100 DEG to 230 DEG C. from substantially equivalent amounts of bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-sulfone and a dichlorobenzene compound in a polar aprotic solvent in the presence of an anhydrous alkali metal carbonate, with or without the addition of a compound which forms an azeotrope.

Polyäther, vorzugsweise sulfongruppenhaltige Polyäther, werden in einem mehrstufigen Kondensationsverfahren bei Temperaturen von 100 bis 230° C aus im wesentlichen äquivalenten Mengen eines Bisphenols und einer Dichlorbenzolverbindung in einem polaren, aprotischen Lösungsmittel in Gegenwart von wasserfreiem Alkalicarbonat und gegebenenfalls eines Azeotropbildners hergestellt. Die nach dem erfindungsgemässen Verfahren hergestellten Polyäther besitzen Molekulargewichte von 15 000 bis 120 000 und eignen sich vorzüglich zur Herstellung von Formkörpern, Fasern, Folien, Kleb- und Beschichtungsstoffen.
