Auf einfache und höchst vorteilhafte Weise können nach dem erfindungsgemässen Verfahren N-Carboxylalkan-aminoalkan-diphosphonsäuren, N-Carboxyalkan-azacycloalkan-diphosphonsäuren und N-Carboxyalkan-aminoarylalkan-diphosphonsäuren durch Umsetzung der entsprechenden Aminoalkan-, Azacycloalkan- und Aminoarylalkan-diphosphonsäuren mit Halogenalkancarbonsäuren und Halogenalkandicarbonsäuren oder ihren Alkalimetallsalzen oder ihren Estern bei einer Temperatur zwischen etwa 50° C und etwa 160° C in wässrigem Medium bei einem pH-Wert zwischen etwa 4 und etwa 12 erhalten werden, wobei das molare Verhältnis von aminosubstituierter Diphosphonsäure zur Halogenalkancarbonsäure zwischen etwa 1 : 1 und etwa 1 : 3 liegt. Dabei werden neue N-carboxyalkylsubstituierte Aminoalkan-diphosphonsäuren, Azacycloalkan-diphosphonsäuren oder Aminoarylalkan-diphosphonsäuren erhalten, die sehr gute komplexierende und sequestrierende Eigenschaften gegenüber mehrwertigen Metallionen aufweisen.
