A cooling water expansion reservoir (7) for a water radiator of an internal combustion engine, which reservoir is connectable to the radiator via an expansion pipe and is provided with an inlet (9) sealable by means of a cover (10), and in which a valve (13) serving to prevent a sudden return of cooling water from the radiator into the expansion reservoir (7) is disposed, characterised in that a tube (19) which extends into a connecting socket (17) of the expansion pipe is secured at one end to the inner face of the cover (10), a seal (24) being disposed between the other end (20) of the tube and the expansion pipe, and in that the valve (13) is disposed in a valve chamber (22) adjoining said other end (20) of the tube (19), the valve chamber communicating with the expansion pipe and the expansion tank (7) through apertures (23 and 26 respectively) in the tube (19).
