A roll stand, for example a universal roll stand having horizontal and vertical roll sets arranged in a common vertical axial plane, the roll stand either being movable along displacement paths on rollers directly into and out of the roll axis for changing the stand and being securable in the roll axis to the base plates on being lifted from the displacement paths, or being movable by means of shortstroke displacement means indirectly into and out of the roll axis from the displacement paths terminating at the sides of the roll axis and being securable in the roll axis to the base plates of the roll stand, characterised in that the roll stand has its own drive (14), which is in driving connection with the rollers (10) and forms the displacement drive along the displacement paths (12a and 13a) by using the dead weight of the roll stand.
