Abstract (en)

Thermal energy is converted into rational energy by using the expansion of a fluid medium to propel a plurality of pistons (27) within at least one continuous, closed-loop passageway (30) mounted on a rotatable platform (11). In at least one region (33) of the passageway (30), the pistons (27) must move inwardly against centrifugal force as the platform (11) rotates. In at least one other region (34) of the passageway (30), the pistons (27) are moved outwardly under the influence of centrifugal force. Means are provided for imparting force to successive ones of the pistons (27) to propel them against centrifugal force in said one region (33); while means are provided for converting the energy of pistons (27) moving outwardly under the influence of centrifugal force in said other region (34) into rotational energy. This rotational energy is used to drive gears (17, 18) mounted on the platform (11) which mesh with a stationary gear (16) carried beneath the platform (11) to cause rotation of the platform (11) about its rotational axis. The energy used to accelerate the pistons (27) is thereby converted into rotational energy of the platform (11). In one embodiment of the invention, at least two continuous, closed-loop passageways (30) are used on the platform (11) in order to prevent an unbalanced condition. In another embodiment of the invention, a single passageway (104) is used on the platform (100) comprising two essentially straight portions (106, 108) on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the platform (100) interconnected at their opposite ends by curved portions (110, 112), also on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the platform (100).
