[origin: ES477086A1] The yield of 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethyl-imidazole from the known reaction between formaldehyde and 4-methyl-imidazole can be increased greatly if the reaction is performed in a concentrated aqueous medium at pH 11-13.5, preferably 12-13.5, at a temperature of 20 DEG -60 DEG C., preferably 30 DEG -40 DEG C., with an amount of formaldehyde not exceeding 1.5 mole per mole of 4-methyl-imidazole.

Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein besonders ergiebiges Verfahren zur Herstellung von 4-Methyl-5-hydroxymethyl-imidazol durch Umsetzung von 4-Methyl-imidazol mit Formaldehyd, das dadurch charakterisiert ist, dass man die Umsetzung in alkalischem Milieu bei einem pH-Bereich von 11 - 13, vorzugsweise von 12 - 13, und bei verhältnismässig tiefer Temperatur von etwa 20 bis 60°C, vorzugsweise von 30 - 40°C, durchführt und dazu keinen Ueberschuss oder einen Ueberschuss von höchstens 0,5 Mol Formaldehyd pro Mol 4-Methyl-imidazol verwendet. Ein Ueberschuss an Formaldehyd wird vermieden indem man diesen laufend, etwa entsprechend dem Verbrauch, zufügt oder als Formaldehyd-Quelle polymeres Formaldehyd verwendet.
