Raising and lowering device for a piece of furniture, in particular a table, with a spindle drive (15) which acts on a part (11) of the piece of furniture, which part is raisably and lowerably guided relative to a stationary part (12, 13), in which case the raisable and lowerable part (11) is guided in a parallel guideway means (17, 21; 18, 22) by means of spaced apart vertical racks (36) through pinions (35) secured on a common, stationarily mounted shaft (16), characterised in that the spindle drive (15) has a push rod (28) which via a resilient thrust ram (27) acts from below directly on to the raisable and lowerable part (11) of the piece of furniture (10), that is without coupling with the parallel guideway means (17, 21; 18, 22).
