Abstract (en)
An N-substituted amide of a lower aliphatic acid, preferably N,N-dimethylformamide, or a solvent mixture including such an amide, is used as the solvent for the reaction of a 2,4-diaminophenyl ether with an acylating agent to produce the corresponding 2-amino-4-acylaminophenyl ether. Such a solvent or solvent mixture may also be employed as the reduction solvent for the catalytic reduction of a 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether to the corresponding 2,4-diaminophenyl ether. The hydrogenation reaction product mixture can be employed directly in the above-mentioned acylation reaction, without concentration or separation of the 2,4-diaminophenyl ether. The reduction and acylation processes according to the invention give a better selectivity and yield of the required products than the corresponding conventional processes using other solvents.
