[origin: US4197022A] Two coaxially mounted spoked print wheels form a single printing element of a serial printer. Each wheel contains plural spokes having print characters thereon and a selected spoke is driven by a hammer to impact paper on a platen thereby effecting printing. Each wheel has a gap or window between two spokes of sufficient size to allow hammer or spoke entry. In operation, the window of one wheel and the selected spoke of the other wheel are rotated to the print position. The hammer is actuated to effect printing. The distance between the hammer and the selected spoke is maintained constant when shifting from wheel to wheel by shifting the wheel combination axially along its axis of rotation. The printing element is advanced relative to the platen and the platen is indexed to effect serial line printing. The two print wheels can readily be removed as a unit from the printer and replaced for type style interchangeability.

Impression de caractères à l'aide d'un élément rotatif muni de languettes porte-caractères radiales. L'élément d'impression (35) selon l'invention, se compose d'au moins deux roues (43) et (45) à languettes porte-caractères radiales, montées sur un même axe d'entraînement (51) et pouvant être entraînées sélectivement en rotation par ce dernier. Chaque roue comporte un secteur exempt de languettes qui est amené en regard de la position d'impression pour permettre l'impression par les languettes porte-caractères de l'autre roue avec laquelle coopère un unique marteau de frappe. La rotation des routes et de ce fait la sélection des caractères, est assurée par un moteur (49). L'élément d'impression (35) est monté de manière amovible sur l'axe (51) afin d'être interchangeable. Cet agencement permet d'accroître le nombre de caractères disponibles sans augmenter l'inertie de l'élément d'impression puisqu'une seule roue à la fois est entraînée en rotation pour la sélection des caractéres.
