Eine elektrochemische Behandlungszelle (10) wird durch Trennvorrichtungen (28, 30, 32, 34, 36) in mehrere Teilzellen (16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26) unterteilt. Diese Teilzellen werden mit einer Elektrolytlösung (72) bis zu einer im wesentlichen gleichen Höhe wie die Höhe der Trennvorrichtungen aufgefüllt. In die Elektrolytlösung werden mehrere stromführende Elektroden (38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48) eingetaucht. Das Metallband (66) wird derart durch die Teilzellen geführt, dass es kontinuierlich in der Elektrolytlösung eingetaucht bleibt und so vor Überhitzung geschützt wird. Durch die Trennvorrichtungen wird der Stromfluss durch den Elektrolyten zwischen benachbarten Teilzellen stark eingeschränkt.
