An apparatus for folding paper sheets or the like contains a conveying apparatus (40), which guides the paper sheets in a transport path. A folding-roller pair (2,4) is attached on the one side of the transport path at a predetermined spacing. On the other side of the transport path, a folding knife (16) is provided flush with the folding gap (14) of the folding-roller pair, which knife contacts the sheet (3) at a desired folding line and guides it against the folding gap. At least one roller of the folding-roller pair possesses in the circumferential direction a folding section (10, 12) and a release section (6,8). The movement of the folding knife is matched to the rotary movement of the rollers in such a way that the folding gap receives when the front edge (11, 13) of the folding section runs past the folding knife against the other roller and takes the sheet with it in the folding gap which is being formed. <IMAGE>

Eine Vorrichtung zum Falzen von Papierbogen od. dgl. enthält eine Transportvorrichtung (40), welche die Papierbogen in einer Transportbahn führt. Ein Falzwalzenpaar (2,4) ist in vorgegebenem Abstand auf der einen Seite der Transportbahn angebracht. Auf der anderen Seite der Transportbahn ist mit dem Falzspalt (14) des Falzwalzenpaares fluchtend ein Falzmesser (16) vorgesehen, welches den Bogen (3) an einer gewünschten Falzlinie berührt und gegen den Falzspalt führt. Mindestens eine Walze des Falzwalzenpaares besitzt in Umfangsrichtung einen Falzabschnitt (10, 12) und einen Freigabeabschnitt (6,8). Die Bewegung des Falzmessers ist auf die Drehbewegung der Walzen derart abgestimmt, daß das Falzspalt einnimmt, wenn die Vorderkante (11, 13) des Falzabschnitts am Falzmesser vorbei gegen die andere Walze läuft und den Bogen in den sich bildenden Falzspalt mitnimmt.
