In known apparatuses for counting and/or sorting coins, two superposed coins can pass into the guide track equipped with a coin counter when the total thickness of the coins is equal to or smaller than the thickness of the thickest type of coin. To prevent incorrect sortings and incorrect countings occurring as a result of this, a coin barrier element is arranged with its lower edge at such a distance from the surface of the coin plate that only coins of small thickness can pass freely individually, whereas superposed so-called double coins are automatically separated by the coin barrier element. To allow individual coins of large thickness to pass, the coin barrier element is made pivotable.

Bei bekannten Munzzähl- und/oder Münzsortiervorrichtungen können zwei übereinanderliegende Münzen dann in die mit einem Münzzähler versehene Führungsbahn gelangen, wenn die Gesamtdicke der Münzen gleich oder geringer ist als die Dicke der dicksten Münzensorte. Um daraus resultierende Fehlsortierungen und Fehlzählungen zu vermeiden, ist ein Münzsperrelement mit seiner Unterkante in einem solchen Abstand von der Oberfläche des Münztellers angeordnet, dass nur Münzen kleiner Dicke einzeln frei passieren können, wohingegen übereinanderliegende sogenannte Doppelmünzen vom Münzsperrelement selbsttätig vereinzelt werden. Zum Passieren einzelner Münzen grosser Dicke ist das Münzsperrelement verschwenkbar ausgebildet.
