Abstract (en)
A liquid drop generation apparatus for an ink jet printing system uses a thin film of polymeric piezoelectric material, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (43, 55, 69) operated in the piezoelectric thickness mode, to stimulate liquid drop formation. The film is placed against a rigid wall (25, 62) of a liquid-filled chamber (22, 63) having at least one nozzle (32, 64) for emitting a continuous stream of liquid (41) from which the drops (42) are formed. The rate of drop generation is related to the frequency of an AC voltage applied across the piezoelectric film.
