Apparatus for separating the top sheet (21) of at least one stack of sheets (10), of the type comprising : supporting means (11) for receiving said stack of sheets, separator means (13, 14, 15) which can engage the first sheet (21) of the stack, and are comprised of a cylindrical shaft (17) which is mounted to rotate about its axis, at least a follower element (14, 15) mounted on the shaft and at least one rotatable element (13) mounted on the follower element and control means (18) for controlling said separator means, characterized in that : the cylindrical shaft (17) comprises at least a threaded portion (16), in that the follower element (14, 15) comprises an internally threaded hub, mounted on said threaded portion of said shaft so as to be secured thereto as a bolt and nut assembly and in that, said control means comprise : means (18) for rotating said shaft in a determined sense and thus, for causing said follower element to move along said shaft in a first direction under the effect of its own inertia, until said rotatable element (13) engages and offsets the first sheet of the stack, then for stopping the rotation of said shaft and thus, for causing said follower element to move in the opposite direction and to disengage said rotatable element from said first sheet.
