A coating apparatus for strip material, more specially metal strips, with a coating roller (10), a dipping or transfer roller (15) and a metering roller (23) able to be moved by way of a carriage (19), whose roller axes are placed side by side in a horizontal space, and the connection lines of the axes (24 to 26) are at an obtuse angle, characterized in that the metering roller (23) has a fourth, vertically adjustable coating roller (32) for use therewith, in that the coating roller (10), the dipping or transfer roller (15) and the metering roller (23) are so designed and placed that vertical adjustment of the fourth roller (32) is possible to such a degree that the outer faces of all four rollers (10, 14, 23 and 32) are at the same or generally the same distance from the axis (37a) of turning of a common rollerlike cleaning roller or brush (37).
