[origin: WO8001861A1] A linear actuator comprises an elongated magnet (36), C-shaped in cross-section, a ferrous core (36) extending axially through the magnet, ferrous end pieces (38, 40) at each end of the magnet and one or more armatures (60) movable longitudinally in the gap between the magnet and core. The armature is small relative to the length of the magnet, and velocity feedback means (Fig. 6) are provided to compensate for the non-linear force versus distance relationship which is inherent in such actuators. The actuator is particularly well suited for use in positioning the printer head (s) of a high speed printer.
