Switching mechanism for a protective circuit breaker, in which a control toggle (6) by means of a ratchet lever (5; 25) acts on a resilient contact lever (1; 21), characterised in that the contact lever (1; 21) co-operates movably with a fixed shaft (14), the contact lever being freely suspended, being biased in the contact closure direction under the effect of a contact spring (16), and supporting itself in the closure position on the ratchet lever (5; 25) and on the fixed contact piece 3, that the point of engagement of the contact spring (16) on the contact lever (1; 21) lies between said shaft (14) and the latching point (4, 5), and a separate pivotally-mounted release lever (7; 27) on the one hand acts on the ratchet lever (5, 25) and on the other hand is controllable by the contact lever (1; 21).
