Abstract (en)
A method of bonding an electrode to a cation exchange membrane of a fluorinated polymer, which in use has ion exchange groups of formula &lparstr& COO &rparstr& mX wherein X represents an alkali metal atom, an alkaline earth metal atom or -NRR min in which R and R min respectively represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; and m is the valence of the group X. The membrane, in a form having ion exchange groups of formula -COOL, wherein L represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-C20 alkyl group, is melt-bonded to said electrode and then the ion exchange groups are converted into groups of formula &lparstr& COO &rparstr& mX.
