Abstract (en)
The method of supporting the hanging wall during mining includes providing support pillars (24), which comprise particulate backfill material, between the hanging wall (18) and the foot wall (16). The backfill material is consolidated so that it has, at most, 25% voids by volume. Layers of reinforcing material are provided in the backfill to take horizontal loads associated with vertical loads being taken by the pillars. The pillars extend back from the work face (12) transversely to the workface.
