Process comprising the injection of oxygen into a bath of molten metal via tuyeres passing through the refractory lining of a converter and emerging at a level below that of the free level of the molten metal, and the simultaneous injection of a protective gas in one or more annular jets, each surrounding an oxygen jet, characterised in that the flow rates and the pressures of oxygen and of the protective gas are regulated, in relation with the dimensions of the tuyeres, so as to impose a ratio of between 0.5 and 1.5 between the velocity of the jet of the protective gas and the velocity of the jet of oxygen on leaving the tuyeres.

Procédé d'affinage de métaux, comportant l'injection d'oxygène dans un bain de métal en fusion, par des tuyères traversant le garnissage rëfractaire d'un convertisseur et débouchant à un niveau inférierur à celui du niveau libre de métal en fusion, et l'injection simultanée d'un gaz protecteur en un ou plusieurs jet annulaires entourant chacun un jet d'oxygène, caractérisé en ce que l'on règle les débits et les pressions de l'oxygène et du gaz protecteur, en relation avec les dimensions des tuyères, de manière à imposer un rapport compris entre 0,5 et 1,5 entre la vitesse du jet de gaz protecteur et la vitesse du jet d'oxygène à la sortie des tuyères.
