A control device for an oil burner comprising an oil preheater, which has at least one heating element thermally coupled to the oil, and comprising a switch means which is influenced by the temperature of the oil and which permits operation of the burner only within a given range in respect of the oil temperature, characterized in that an electronic circuit (7) which influences the switch means (18) in dependence on the oil temperature simultaneously serves for monitoring the actual condition in comparison with the reference condition of the switch means (18) which is disposed in the starting circuit of the oil burner, and, together with the switch means (18), is a component of an automatic firing apparatus (1) which is in any case required for operation of the oil burner.
