Container closable by a lid (29) for receiving and compressing refuse, in particular paper refuse, in which the pivotally mounted lid (29) dipping into the container has a satisfactory shape for the space requirement of the individual pieces of rubbish to be thrown in and compressed and is connected to a hand grip (32) which is pivotally mounted on the lid (29) and which in turn is connected to a latching device (33) which is intented to engage behind a latching projection on the container, whereby the arrangement is so constructed that by lifting the hand grip (32) against a spring force a swivelling and thus unlatching of the latching device occurs, characterized in that the hand grip (32) is connected to the lid (29) by means of an elastically flexible L-shaped connecting member (31), whereby the one limb of the L-shaped connecting member (31) connected to the hand grip (32) extends substantially in the longitudinal direction of the container and the other limb of the L-shaped connecting member (31) connected to the lid (29) extends substantially transverse to the longitudinal direction of the container, that the latching device (33) is arranged on the limb of the L-shaped connecting member (31) connected to the hand grip (32) and that the lid (29), the L-shaped connecting member (31), the latching device (33) and the hand grip (32) comprise a single injection moulded component.
