Apparatus for coating travelling webs (1), for instance of paper or cardbord, by means of which an excess of coating material is removed by a stationary scraper (5), said scraper having a curved entry flank (7) on the entry side, said entry flank (7) having a sharp-edged end (6) which can be pressed with a predetermined pressure on the coated side against a supporting roll (2) which supports the travelling web (1) on the non-coated side an which has an elastic surface, and the scraper (5) being pivotable about an axis (D) extending parallel to the central axis (B) of the support roll (2), characterized in that the inherently rigid scraper (5) is designed as a sector of a roll, the entry flank (7) has a radius of curvature of from 50-200 mm and the sharp-edged end (6) of the scraper (5) can be pressed against the web in a line which lies in a plane defined by the central axis (B) of the support roll (2) and the pivot axis (D) of the scraper (5).
