A device for printers, in particular ink mosaic printers, with a printer head (TS) which moves row-by-row along a data carrier and with a device which moves along a paper feed guide (RF) or the like in the row direction and which serves to recognise the position of a data carrier (A) resting on the paper feed guide (RF) or the like, using a scanning arrangement which consists of a radiation source (LED) and a receiver (FT) followed by an analysis circuit arrangement (IC) which generates a recognition signal in dependence upon the presence of a data carrier (A), characterised in that the analysis circuit arrangement (IC) is designed such that it moves the pulse-operated scanning arrangement (LED, FT) in dependence upon a search signal which triggers a search operation, and thereby assigns a plurality of individual scanning pulses to each overall scanning section, which is subdivided into individual base scanning sections (B1-BN), and that the analysis circuit arrangement commonly analyses the scanning pulses of each base scanning section (B).
