Apparatus for heating sand, gravel or similar granular material, comprising arcuately profiled channels (22) arranged in a receptacle (1) containing the material to be heated for feeding a heating gas into the material, and further arcuately profiled channels (22) for discharging the heating gas from the material, characterized in that the arcuately profiled channels (22) which serve to feed the gas into the material as well as the arcuately profiled channels (22) which serve to evacuate the gas from the material are grouped in alternately laterally adjacent batteries (2, 3) each comprising several vertically superposed arcuately profiled channels and forming vertical partition walls between which the material to be heated is arranged in relatively thin layers (5).
