[origin: WO8100048A1] A surgical tool which may be utilized either for compression or distraction of a fractured bone. The tool includes a threaded shaft (12) having a pair of cap members (14, and 70) secured to each end thereof. Projecting from one of the cap members (70) is a short pin (80) which is preferably angled either towards or away from the other cap member (14). An internally threaded sleeve (96) is mounted on the shaft (12) between the cap members (14 and 70) and includes a knob (30) having a knurled outer surface for permitting the sleeve (96) to be manually adjusted in either direction along the threaded shaft (12). Another pin-supporting member (36) is removably mounted about the sleeve (96) and has another short pin (40) projecting from one surface thereof. The two pins are positioned within pre-drilled holes on each side of a fractured bone that is to be compressed or distracted. The surgical tool reduces the problems of bone damage and potential infection since a smaller incision is required and it allows both compression or distraction with minimal equipment while freeing the surgeon's hands to apply other fixation devices without encircling the fractured bone portions.

Un outil chirurgical peut etre utilise soit pour la compression soit pour l'etirement d'un os fracture. L'outil comprend un axe filete (12) ayant une paire de tetes (14 et 70) fixees a chaque extremite de l'axe. Une courte goupille (80) fait saillie depuis l'une des tetes (70), de preference en faisant un angle en direction de ou en s'eloignant de l'autre tete (14). Un manchon filete interieurement (96) est monte sur l'arbre (12) entre les tetes (14 et 70) et comprend une bague (30) ayant une surface exterieure moletee pour permettre au manchon (96) d'etre regle manuellement dans les deux sens dans la longueur de l'axe filete (12). Un autre organe de support de goupille (36) est monte de maniere amovible autour du manchon (96) et possede une autre goupille courte (40) faisant saillie depuis une surface de celle-ci. Les deux goupilles sont positionnees dans des trous perces a l'avance de chaque cote d'un os fracture qui doit etre comprime ou etire. L'instrument chirurgical permet de limiter les dommages causes aux os ainsi que les risques d'infection car il implique une incision de taille reduite et permet aussi bien la compression et l'etirement a l'aide d'un outil large restreint tout en laissant les mains du chirurgien libres pour appliquer d'autres dispositifs de fixation sans encercler les parties osseuses fracturees.
