A process for recovering the heavy metals, uranium and/or plutonium, from a starting solution which, in order to absorb UO**2+ - and PuO2 **2+ -ions, is passed over a macroporous, copolymer resin bed which is provided with a phosphorus compound as an active material and from which the heavy metal ions are eluted by means of nitric acid, characterised in that as starting solution, filtrates from conversion processes for the production of UO2 or U/PuO2 , as the case may be, are used, which have been adjusted to a pH-value < 3 by the addition of 5-10 m HNO3 , and for the elution, 3 to 6 molar nitric acid is used in a temperature range of up to 80 degrees C ; and that both the residual solution, which is produced after the starting solution has been passed over the resin bed, and the evaporated eluate are returned to the conversion process.
