Apparatus for holding sheet metal coils (12), comprising a rotary spider (3), which comprises carrying arms (2) for carrying slidably fitted sheet metal coils (12) and which has a hub (1) that is mounted on a stand (15) and in accordance with the angular spacing of the carrying arms (2) is rotatable about a vertical axis (4) so that one of the carrying arms (2) is disposed in a predetermined receiving position at a time, in which receiving position the slidably fitted sheet metal coils (12) are slidable along the carrying arms (2) by handling means which are supported on tracks of the carrying arms (2), characterized in that the handling means consist of a handling car (18), which has a lifting saddle (25) and which in position of rest is mounted on a track of the stand (5) within the hub (1) of the rotary spider (3), and the track of the carrying arm (2) disposed in the receiving position at a time adjoins the track of the stand (5) so that the handling car (18) can move out on said carrying arm (2).
