Abstract (en)

Mfr. of firelighters is carried out by combining (a) kerosene, (b) a binder in the form of a soap system, and (c) a filler arranged to open up the structure of the finished product to give more effective combustion. The filler can comprise porous particles (e.g. of foamed or expanded plastics) or particles with tiny concave pockets on their surface. Exemplified fillers include perlite in combination with wood flour or sawdust. The soap system can be formed by mixing the kerosene with stearin at 70-75 deg.C and then mixing with NaOH or Na silicate. Component (c) increases the burning time and enhances combustion.
