Abstract (en)
The ink jet array printer comprises a row of printing guns with a system for supplying ink in a downwardly directed stream which, at the level of the charge electrodes, breaks up into a stream of regularly spaced drops. The charge electrodes are supplied, under the control of printing information, with sequences of different voltage levels. The charged drops descend between a pair of deflection plates where they are subjected to a constant transverse electrostatic field which deflects the drops to a degree dependent upon the level of charge they carry. In accordance with the printing information the drops charged for printing are deposited on the printing surface whilst those drops not intended for printing are not charged and not deflected and fall into the drop interception gutters located immediately below the charge elctrodes. Detectors, are provided to control the printed drop placement positions in the direction transversely to the direction of relative motion of the printer and the printing surface.
