[origin: EP0043239A1] A tongue and buckle fastener for a safety belt has a tongue with a latching formation which is engaged by a latch plate (48). A push button (22) moves the latch plate (48) into the release position in which the tongue can be ejected by a spring-loaded ejector (36). Prior to insertion of the tongue, the latch plate (48) is held in its fully released position by the push button (22) which is held fully depressed by a catch lever (72). A projection (70) on the ejector (36) holds the catch lever (72) in its engaged position to retain the push button (22) until the ejector (36) has been moved inwards by the tongue by a sufficient distance for the latching formation on the tongue to have passed the latching plate (48).
