Abstract (en)

A series of decals are attached to an elongated web (20) and are spaced a generally constant distance apart in the direction of the length of the web. The machine includes supply and take-up spindles (28, 30) for rotatably supporting reels (27, 29) for the web, and a web drive (48, 49) for moving the web from the supply reel (27) to the take-up reel (29). A mandrel rotatably supports the article (23) and a movable head (33) presses the web and the decal against an article on the mandrel. The web passes from the supply reel (27), between the mandrel and the head (33), and to the take-up reel (29). The machine further includes a brake (42) which, when engaged, holds the web against movement, and a decal sensor assembly (41). After the machine is actuated to cause the movable head (33) to press the decal against an article (23), the brake (42) is actuated to release the web, and the web is then pulled across the article. The moving web rotates the head which in turn engages and rotates the mandrel. The article revolves with the mandrel and the decal is rolled onto the article. The decal sensor assembly controls the operation of the brake to enable advance of the web during and after application of each decal.
