[origin: CA1128378A] The present invention provides a process for producing vanadium carbide layers on workpieces of carbon-containing iron and iron alloys. Salt baths containing primarily borates as the base substance have been used at 800 to 1100.degree.C. The melts were thus rendered very viscous and the losses on discharge were large. In accordance with the invention this is avoided with salt baths containing alkaline earth metal and/or alkali metal halides as salts in addition to 1 to 30% of vanadium or ferrovanadium powder. Baths of barium chloride with 1 to 50% of sodium chloride are particularly suitable.
