[origin: US4473736A] A plasma generator comprises a metallic tube of small diameter inside which can circulate a gas such as argon at a small flow rate, which is discharged at the front end of the tube. The tube is coupled with an energizing structure which can comprise a frequency generator supplying electromagnetic microwaves, via a coaxial connection, a coupling structure allowing the transfer of the energy of the generator to the front portion of the metallic tube. In the absence of a gas current in the tube, the front portion radiates the energy transmitted to it in the manner of an antenna. When a gas is discharged at the end of the tube, said energy allows maintaining a plasma in front of the latter. This plasma generator device is usable in many applications, such as a blowtorch a light source or torch usable in spectrography, a plasma motor or an ion source.

Un générateur de plasma comprend un tube métallique (1) de petit diamètre à l'intérieur duquel on peut faire circuler un gaz tel que de l'argon à un faible débit, qui s'échappe à l'extrémité antérieure (3) du tube. Ce tube est couplé à une structure excitatrice qui peut comprendre un générateur de fréquence (21) alimentant par une liaison coaxiale (17) une structure de couplage permettant le transfert de l'énergie du générateur à la partie antérieure du tube métallique. En l'absence d'un courant de gaz dans ce tube, cette partie antérieure (14) rayonne l'énergie qui lui est transmise à la manière d'une antenne. Lorsqu'un gaz s'échappe à l'extrémité (3) du tube (1), cette énergie permet d'entretenir un plasma à l'avant de celle-ci. Ce dispositif générateur de plasma peut recevoir des applications, notamment comme chalumeau, source lumineuse ou torche utilisable en spectrographie, moteur à plasma ou source d'ions.
