A weft insertion device for converting a shuttle loom into a shuttleless loom, having two oppositely-movable thread grippers (18, 19) which can be introduced from both sides into a shed and which are respectively fastened to a toothed band (20, 21) which meshed with a chain wheel (36) which is driven by means of a drive chain (33) with an alternating direction of revolution and which is coupled with a drive shaft (22, 23), revolving in the same direction, of the weaving machine by way of a movement reversing mechanism which contains a crank arm (24) which is fastened to the drive shaft, characterised in that the movement reversing mechanism has a lever (28) which has one end (28.1) which is swingable about a stationary pin (30) and which carries in its middle region a hinge pin (27) which projects into a longitudinal slot of a guide rod (26) which is coupled with the crank arm (24), and the other end of which is coupled by way of a guide rod (29) with a sliding carriage (31) which is mounted so as to be longitudinally movable and to which the drive chain (33) is connected.
