An automatic packing machine for introducing merchandise (7, 16) into and enclosing it in a box of the type comprising two oppositely disposed long sides (2) which are each extended at the two ends by two large foldable flaps (2a, 2b) and two oppositely disposed short sides (3) which are each extended at the two ends by two small foldable flaps (3a, 3b) of the same height as the large flaps, said flaps (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b), once folded over towards the centre, forming the top and the bottom of the box, said machine comprising : a feed conveyor (8) for the merchandise to be packed ; a magazine disposed above the feed conveyor (8), within which the boxes are stacked in a flat condition and folded along two diagonally opposite edges ; a mechanical device for extracting the boxes from the magazine, unfolding them and setting them square so that the flaps (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) of said boxes are then disposed in a position of extending in line with the respective corresponding sides ; introducing means for introducing the merchandise (7, 16) into the unfolded box by way of its open bottom ; a discharge conveyor ; and means for closing the flaps (2b, 3b) of the bottom of the box and means for closing the flaps (2a, 3a) of the top of the box, characterised in that said means for introducing the merchandise (7, 16) to be packed within a box which is in an unfolded condition with its bottom open comprise lift means (10) which are intended to lift the merchandise (7, 16) to be packed along a substantially vertical path of movement from the level at which it is disposed on the feed conveyor (8) to the interior of said box with its bottom open.
