Abstract (en)

A device suitable for sampling blood is disclosed. The device includes a barrel (11) and a plunger assembly within the barrel (11) for slidable reciprocating motion therein. The plunger assembly comprises a hollow piston (12) carrying a separably mounted annular ring (20) on its operative distal end, and a membrane element (21) positioned between the distal end of the hollow piston (12) and the annular ring (20); the plunger assembly may be provided with a specific seal (23) carried by the plunger assembly for sealing the space between the barrel (11) and the hollow piston (12) when the plunger assembly is reciprocated within the barrel (11). The membrane element (21) is pervious to the passage of air therethrough but impervious to the passage of liquid after being wetted so as to allow communication between the interior of the barrel (11) and the hollow piston (12). The device can be used to draw off a sample of arterial blood, whilst being prevented from withdrawing venous blood.
