Abstract (en)

In making diaphragms and diaphragm-coated electrodes for electrolytic cells, such as those used for the electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine and caustic soda or caustic potash, by depositing a slurry of asbestos fibres and polytetrafluoroethylene on a substrate and heating to dry the resultant mat and fuse the polytetrafluoroethylene, the latter is in the form of fibrids made by applying a compressive shear action to particles and the heating step is carried out so that the polytetrafluoroethylene fibrids are fused and cause to shrink.
