[origin: EP0050075A2] 1. A method of separating, in a natural stone having either one direction of cleavage plane or plane of lesser cohesion, or cleavage planes or planes of lesser cohesion which are all parallel to one another, along a plane parallel to this direction or to these cleavage planes or planes of lesser cohesion, blocks, flags or slabs which are only connected to the mass in place by the plane along which it is desired to effect the separation, a method characterised in that (1) the block, flag or slab (G) to be produced is subjected to a shearing stress (R1-R2) in relation to the mass (M) from which it is to be separated, this stress being essentially parallel to the plane of fissility, (2) a cleft (L) is started by any method, in the zone subject to shearing, in the plane (K6) along which it is desired to effect the separation, and (3) the propagation of this cleft (L) is ensured in such a way that the propagation face (I) is still subjected, at least in its very large majority, to the shearing stress (R1-R2), it being possible for the sequence of the operations (1) and (2) to be carried out in this order or in reverse order.
