Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0050314A2] In vibratable members or resonant bodies for sound-producing devices, in particular musical instruments, there is the need for design measures that are simple to carry out in constructional terms and are aimed at purposely influencing the resonance spectrum and the sound quality, in particular also the transient response and thus the playability of musical instruments. To obtain a solution, there is formed on the surface, in particular also on the edge surface, of vibratable members - e.g. on a string- bearing bridge of a stringed or plucked instrument - a finely profiled notched structure (ES9, FKS, KKS), or also a wavy edged structure (KWS), which reduces the ratio of the bending stiffness to the vibrating mass and/or effects a subdivision of the vibratable member into vibratable submembers and/or an enlargement of the effective sound radiating area. These measures also come into consideration for mechanised string instruments (piano) and for wind instruments, including mechanised ones (organ), and for auxiliary equipment such as bows. <IMAGE>
