Method for comparing the timekeeping state of an electronic timepiece with the contents of a programmable register in order to release a warning signal whenever the contents of at least one timekeeping counter of the timepiece coincides with the contents of a corresponding portion of the register, characterized in that said method includes the steps of inserting in another portion of the register (2) in place of timekeeping information a code for a state which the corresponding timekeeping counters (1) never attain under normal operation (-), and validating the comparison between the state of the corresponding timekeeping counters whatever said state may be and the contents of said other portion of the register (2) whereby said state is prevented from inhibiting said warning signal (4).
