1. Cathode element for a fusion electrolysis cell, especially for manufacture of aluminium, with a carbon block, in which a cathode bar is anchored in a groove, while in each side wall of this groove there is formed a recess extending over the entire length of a block, for reception of a cast iron sheath filling the space between bar and groove, characterised in that in the working condition the recess in the upper part of the groove (12) has oblique surfaces (14) diverging in the direction of the groove opening, which at their lower ends run into approximately horizontal abutment surfaces (16) terminating at the corresponding side surfaces (15) of the groove.

Insbesondere bei einer Schmelzflusselektrolysezelle zum Herstellung von Aluminium wird der elektrische Gleichstrom über eiserne Kathodenbarren (11) abgeführt. Diese sind in einer Nut (12) von Kohleblöcken (10) eingelagert und beispielsweise mit Gusseisen (13) befestigt. Jede Seitenwand der Nut (12) hat eine sich über die ganze Länge des Kohleblockes erstreckende Ausnehmung (14,15,16) welche das flüssige Gusseisen aufnimmt. In Arbeitslage bilden diese im oberen Bereich der Nut (12) angebrachten Ausnehmungen in Richtung der Nutöffnung ausweitende Schrägflächen (14), die an deren unterem Ende in ungefähr horizontale, an der entsprechenden Seitenfläche (15) der Nut endende Auflageflächen (16) übergehen. Die Neigung (α) der konischen Seitenflächen (14) in bezug auf die Vertikale liegt bevorzugt zwischen 3 und 15°.
