[origin: US4381976A] The process which is the subject of this invention concerns the preparation of titanium by electrolysis from a bath of molten halides. It comprises effecting partial reduction of the TiCl4 which is used as the starting material in a separate reaction vessel, and then directly feeding the electrolyzing apparatus by means of titanium halides with a valency of less than 3. The partial reduction of the TiCl4 is effected by means of divided titanium or another metal such as Na.

Le procédé qui fait l'objet de l'invention concerne la préparation du titane par électrolyse à partir d'un bain d'halogénures fondus. Il consiste à effectuer une réduction partielle du TiCl4 utilisé comme matière de départ dans un réacteur séparé puis à alimenter directement en (11) l'électrolyseur (10) au moyen d'halogénures de titane de valence inférieure à 3. La réduction partielle du TiCl4 est effectuée par du titane divisé ou par un autre métal que Na.
