Melting device and applicator for hot melt adhesive, in particular for edge banding machines, comprising a melting chamber (9) having a heatable melting wall (11) with discharge openings provided at its end facing away from the applicator (11), and a delivery piston (12) disposed in sliding relationship within the melting chamber to press the solid hot melt adhesive against the melting wall (11) so that it is partly molten and supplied under pressure to the applicator (1) through a supply channel (4) disposed rearwardly of the melting wall (11), characterized in that there is disposed behind the melting wall (11) a conventional supply chamber (16) with an extension of the supply channel (4) delimited by webs (17) extending into the said supply chamber and ending by its inlet opening in the area of the supply chamber (16) facing away from the applicator (1), and that a temperature sensor (19) is disposed in the supply chamber (16) near the inlet opening of the supply channel (4) for controlling the heating device (20) for the melting wall (11).
