Guiding and centering device for a drill rod (26) of the taphole (22) of a shaft furnace designed to be mounted on the front end of the tool holding bar (30) of the taphole drilling machine which is equipped with a device (34) for gripping the end (28) of the drill rod (26), which can slide along the tool holding bar (30) of the machine, comprising a pair of pivoting jaws (38, 40), (58, 60) of complementary shapes, and a mechanism serving to pivot the two jaws (38, 40), (58, 60) synchronously between an open position and a closed position in which the jaws (38, 40) (58, 60) grasp the drill rod, characterized in that the jaws (38, 40), (58, 60) are mounted on parallel rotation shafts (42, 44) (62, 64) at the front end of the bar (30) perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the latter and symmetrically on either side of the prolongation of the axis of the gripping device (34) and in that the inner side of each of the jaws (38, 40) (58, 60) takes the form of an inclined ramp (38a, 40a), the ramp of one of the jaws (38) being situated in the upper part of the jaw and orientated to act form the top downwards on the drill rod (26), while the ramp (40a) of the other jaw (40) occupies a symmetrical position in the lower part of the jaw and is orientated to act from the bottom upwards on the drill rod (26).
