[origin: WO8201848A1] A process for preserving wood with either a water-borne or oil-borne preservative including a conditioning step in which the extractives in the wood system are removed prior to the preservation step. The wood is placed in a heated acid bath to diffuse out the water soluble extractives and then subjected to a vacuum so as to reduce the boiling point of the water trapped in the wood whereby the steam so generated will expel the remaining water from the wood cells.
