[origin: GB2098740A] To monitor the quality of threaded joint tightening process being performed by a power tool, the torque on and position of a drive shaft, driven by a motor and adapted to carry tools, are measured so as to determine the angle through which the drive shaft rotates whilst the applied torque rises from a threshold value to its greatest value. The measurements are processed, whilst the tool is in operation, and used to indicate whether the angle of rotation and highest torque value both lie inside predetermined maximum and minimum values. The torque on the shaft is measured by a strain gauge 30 and the angle of rotation by slotted disc 40 and optical sensors 41, 42. The preocessing is performed digitally and is preferably updated at periodic intervals. <IMAGE>
