A shock absorbing device for a hydraulic cylinder including a shock absorbing hole (4) formed in an end wall (2) of cylinder, a passageway (6) having a port (5) opening in the shock absorbing hole at its inner peripheral surface (5A) and a shock absorbing member (13) attached to the piston (11) and aligned with the shock absorbing hole so that it enters the hole during shock absorbing stroke. The shock absorbing member (13) throttles the flow of fluid in the hole (4) to perform a first stage shock absorption and then throttle the flow of fluid through the port (5) to perform a second stage shock absorption.
